Electric Fencing Tips
Grounding:
This is the most important part of your fence. If one thinks about your ground rods as a radio antenna it is easy to see how important a proper ground is. The ground system should consist of three ground rods that are 6-8 feet in length and spaced 15 to 20 feet apart as well as 15 feet from your energizer. One must also remember that you may have to add ground rods for severely dry conditions as well as for frozen ground as these provide less conductivity than moist soil conditions.
Use the same types of metals:
Mixing the metals one uses in the conductors will create electrolysis which will increase the rate of corrosion of your fence. By using the same types of metal in your conductors and connections you reduce the chance of electrolysis and will greatly increase the longevity of your fence line.
Reduce the amount of tie-offs and connections:
Every time you must splice or cut your wire you risk the chance of losing some of the conductive efficiency of your fence. By ensuring that your fence lince is as continuous as possible, you will be sure to benefit from the maximum conductive efficiency from the materials you use.
Use high quality insulators:
Sunlight and Ultraviolet rays will deteriorate plastic over time. By ensuring that you use high quality insulators you will be certain to enjoy the best possible insulating qualities in the longest lasting insulators. This will also add to the longevity of the fence.
High Tensile Wire:
When using high tensile wire, it is important to ensure that it unrolls without any kinks as this will create a weak spot in your fence. Any weak spot will weaken the entire fence and will lead to a fence failure and the possible loss of your animals.
Wire stretched too tight:
Do not stretch your high tensile wire too tight. High tensile wire is made to have some elasticity and give in it. If the wire is too tight, it will not allow the fence to give in the event of an animal hitting the sire and will ultimately cause the wire to break.
Inadequate fence energizer:
A large energizer can be used on a small fence, however a small energizer will not be able to be used in any expansions that may be in your future. A large energizer will also be able to show through vegetaions while a small energizer may not carry the charge as grass and shrubs grow up against your wires. In this case, bigger is indeed better.
