   Functions of an Electric Fence

The Circuit Of An Electric Fence

The fence energizers converts either AC or DC energry and produces a strong electric pulse, also called the
"shock".   When an animal touches the hot conductor ( tape, wire or rope ) the electric circuit is closed and
the animal  receives an electric shock.  The above illustration displays a simplified model of a closed circuit
in a functioning electric fence.

The electric shock is not  dangerous, and with proper  training  almost all  animals  will learn to  respect an
electric fence for the effective psychological barrier that it provides. Remember,  the purpose of  the electric
fence is not to hurt or to  give the animal fear of the fence, but to protect and keep them in safely.

Since an electric fence is not a physical barrier, the maintenance of a properly installed fence will be much
less when compared to an equivalent conventional fence, adding to the economic benefits of electric fencing.
Proper installation of the fence will ensure a safe environment for animals as well as a low maintenance and
economical alternative for producers.
